Property Tax Appeals

April 21, 2011

The real estate market world wide has taken a huge hit, plummeting values at levels of years ago. No market has been exempt from the effects of this event.

Since taxes levied on real property are based on the value, it stands to reason that if your property no longer enjoys the higher value, you should not continue to be penalized with the higher taxes.

Most Taxing Authorities are under no obligation to automatically reduce your property tax should the value of your real estate decline.

Most taxing authorities are not under any obligation to reduce your real estate taxes should the value of your real estate decline, they do however offer a mechanism for the property owner to demonstrate to the taxing authority what the current value is, and to have his tax liability reduced.

This is not a new process, property tax assessment appeals have been around since property taxes were first levied, but with current conditions, it has become a hot topic, and will continue to be so for many years to come.
