Porter County approves tax abatement

By Susan Emery Times Correspondent |

PORTAGE | The Porter County Council has approved a tax abatement for two companies seeking to move out of Lake County.

The council voted 7-0 last week to confirm a resolution meeting economic revitalization area qualifications and 7-0 to approve a tax abatement for real estate and personal property for ADH Ventures II LLC.

No one spoke at a public hearing hosted by the council.

Gary Electric Motor Service and Illiana Electric Service, which repair motors for large industrial customers such as steel mills and automobile companies, are seeking the abatement for improvements they want to make to their building, and on all eligible equipment.

Attorney Todd Leeth, who represented the companies, told the council Tuesday night the improvements would be "modest," about $170,000 for the building and $102,000 for personal property.

The taxes on the improvements to the building and personal property will be abated over 10 years.

Leeth said the council last month had taken the first step when it granted preliminary approval for the creation of an economic revitalization area at the site of the former Buck's Powersports at 393 E. U.S. 30 in Center Township.

The companies will bring 22 jobs, 20 of which are full time, with a payroll of $885,000, Leeth said.

He called the companies the "poster child for this type of deduction" because they operate clean businesses that will not compete with existing companies in Porter County.

Councilman Jim Polarek said he spoke with East Porter County School Corp., which would be affected by the abatement, and "they have no problem with it."
